Garage door repair

09/12/2013 Back To Blog

Garage door repair can be a fun activity for some of us. Minor fixes like lubrication and cleaning the tracks can be done without any professional help as they don’t require specialized equipments. However, when the repairs are complicated and dangerous, it’s best to leave it to the experts.

Here are three things to check before calling for help. Don’t forget your safety glasses and gloves before starting with them.

Damaged metal tracks

First, you need to see if the metal tracks are damaged. Metal tracks need to be smooth and if dents occur, they might not work. If you notice some bumps, straighten them carefully using a hammer.

Alignment of the tracks

The alignment of the tracks should be checked periodically and if they are not properly aligned, your door might not function smoothly. Keep the door down first and loosen the tracks one at a time without completely removing the lag bolts. Garage door adjustment of overhead track should be at the same distance as the wall tracks.

Tracks and rollers must be lubricated

The tracks and rollers must be lubricated regularly to ensure smooth movement. Make sure that you do not apply too much grease on the opener rail as it tends to drip. Lubrication of rollers is best done with a silicone spray so that the hinges are also coated well. Thicker sprays are a better option as they coat better and last long. Finally check if the garage door balances properly.

If you have done all of the above without any luck, then it could be either a broken garage door spring or a garage door panel repair issue. Garage door repair may not always be difficult if you are armed with the right knowledge and take safety precautions before doing minor repairs on your own.
